WHAT IS HYPNOSIS & HOW DOES IT WORK?

Hypnosis is direct auto suggestion and guided imagery from the hypnotherapist to bring about a relaxed state of the conscious mind, in order to change unwanted habits or behaviors at an sub-conscious level. One should not expect to feel hypnotised, but just expect to feel relaxed, to achieve optimum level of success. Unfortunately many people only think of stage hypnosis and this brings to mind many misconceptions. These myths, these limiting beliefs then block the access to the subconscious mind to achieve the results the client is looking for. The hypnotherapist will find his or her long-term success rate to be quite low if they do not work first with the beliefs about hypnosis. If a hypnotherapist does not understand the critical faculty "the fire-wall" between the subconscious and the conscious mind, then the client will not be able to be hypnotised due to his limiting beliefs. Beliefs are crucial to the outcome of ones long term success with hypnosis. In reality beliefs are crucial to everyones overall behavior in all areas of life. The beliefs are the drivers to the programs in the subconscious mind. They determine ones behaviors. For example if the client believes that he cannot be hypnotised; then he cannot be hypnotised. "Our limiting beliefs serve us well, they protect us from our own fears" It is important to work with ones beliefs as limiting beliefs sabotage our efforts to break free of old habits and behaviors. "This is where NLP is extremely useful" Through changing our limiting beliefs to that of unlimited beliefs, with logic and using hypnosis to relax our conscious mind, we are able to let down the walls, the barriers and accept the positive auto suggestions, to automatically move forward. These are the limiting beliefs that many people unfortunately believe: Hypnosis is mind-control, it is -being asleep, I will have amnesia afterwards. I have no power or say over the suggestions that will be given to me. Hypnosis is witchery. I can't be hypnotised. All of these limiting beliefs truly are misconceptions. Funnily enough these beliefs originate from the stage hypnotists that have misguided the people to believe in their beliefs for entertainment purposes only. Hypnotherapy is completely different. Anyone can be hypnotised and I have never found anyone that cannot be hypnotised in all the years that I have worked with hypnotherapy and this is because I clear all of the misconceptions and myths up before I begin to hypnotise any client, especially people who are religious. As they have many limiting beliefs about what they should and should not do. What is real and what is not real about hypnosis. I have found that there are many fears around hypnosis with a lot of people and mostly with religious people. I am certainly not against religion, I respect all other peoples belief's, we have freewill and it is own right to choose whatever it is that we want to believe. The important question to ask ourselves is; Is this belief serving me? or the higher power that I believe in? "Of course the question about the higher power, or whatever one calls their higher power or powers, only refers to people who choose to believe in that.

Albert Einstein made an amazing quote that sticks with me: If you believe that you can - then you can. If you believe that you can't, then you can't. Be careful what you believe because our beliefs will determine our behaviors and ultimately our lives. Everything is thought and all beliefs we choose to believe, are thoughts that we keep thinking. Hypnosis helps us to concentrate and focus easily on what it is that we want. The mind is influenced by our culture, our conditioning, our parents, our peers, our relationships, our teachers and our environment that we live in.



HISTORY OF HYPNOSIS


As far back as 1000 BC - the Egyptian Priests had, what they called, "sleep temples" In these sacred places the priests put their worshipers to sleep and then suggested to them - that they were free from disease and any other illness. Amazingly it worked. The followers believed in their Priests and they were miraculously cured. In the fourth century BC in Greece and then 100 yrs later in Rome these sleep temples flourished. During the first century AD, laying on of hands (healing through touch using unseen energy) became very popular. The English monarchy encouraged the laying on of hands as a valid therapy, which reinforced it's popularity. In the middle of the 11th Century, Edward the Confessor (1004-66) was famous for perfecting the "royal touch." However, during the middle ages, mainly due to the influence of the church, the practice of suggestion was relegated to the category of black magic and sorcery and forbidden on pain and death.

Fortunately for us hypnosis underwent a revival during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, when the French nobility popularized mesmerism, also known as animal magnetism. Mesmerism was named after it's leading partitioner, Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), whose practice was in such demand and grew to such a size that it became difficult for him to handle. It was reported that up to 3000 people a day were seeking his healing touch. Mesmer was eventually discredited by a group of envious doctors and politicians and mesmerism was relegated to side shows and carnivals.

Even though Mesmer was censored and exiled, his theories form the basis of modern day psychotherapy.

Dr James Braid (1795-1860), an Englishman who believed that mesmerism was a swindle, set out to discredit the trickery once and for all, but became convinced and fascinated by it instead. It was Dr Braid who introduced the word "hypnosis" and "suggestion" to this mysterious therapy. (Hypnosis is the Greek word meaning; sleep")

Emile Coue (1857-1926), a French pharmacist, discovered the power of autosuggestion, which he named "waking suggestion". In the early 1900s, Coue created the famous affirmation: "Everyday in every way, I am getting better and better." He suggested that if anybody was in physical pain they should repeat the words, "It is going, it is going", extremely quickly. Should the pain return he suggested repeating the process 10, 20, 100, or even 200 times if necessary, until the pain disappeared. It was Coue who first proposed that it was the suggestion being accepted by the mind of the subject, rather than the actual suggestion given by the hypnotist, that achieved results. He also made the discovery that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. "

In France, Coue enjoyed enormous popularity with thousands benefiting from his autosuggestion.

This all changed when his theories of autosuggestion were taken to the United States. At the hands of an unscrupulous promoter the new wonder cure became the subject of jokes and ridicule. But hypnosis was used for pain control during the Second World War and the Korean War. Then in 1958 the powerful American Medical Association approved hypnosis for therapeutic use. This was largely through the efforts of Milton Erickson. (1901-80), regarded as the father of modern day medical hypnotherapy.

Unfortunately, many people think only about stage hypnosis when they hear the word hypnotherapy. The reality is that people who get up on stage and run around like chickens or impersonate Elvis, have very little to do with clinical hypnotherapy. When medical hypnosis is used for such purposes as helping a person quit smoking, lose weight or reduce stress, the hypnotherapist is only assisting the person to do something he or she already wants to do. The stage hypnotist goes through a series of tests to select the most suggestible and cooperative members from the audience, whereas a hypnotherapist will accept anyone who needs help as a client.

Hypnosis is not a loss of self-control or being controlled by someone else. It is about using your imagination and being in touch with your unconscious mind while you are in a state of relaxation.

Hypnosis today is no longer considered black magic. It has gained acceptance and respectability among both the medical establishment and the public. These days hypnosis is also known as meditation, relaxation therapy, guided imagery and visualization. It looks as if it is finally here to stay. Dr A.M. Krasner founded the American Institute of Hypnotherapy in 1981 and he described hypnosis as a process that produces relaxation, distraction of the conscious mind, heightened suggestibility and increased awareness., allowing access to the subconscious mind and to the imagination. It also produces the ability to experience thoughts and images as real.. Here is an example for you.

As you read the following words below, it is not the words that make change happen, it is how you interpret each word that makes all the difference:

Imagine you're in front of a large lemon tree.

The lemon tree is full of green leaves and large yellow lemons.

Imagine that you can see the bubbly texture of one particular lemon.

See yourself reaching up to that lemon, you take it in your hand and twist the lemon off the tree.

You can feel the cool bubbly texture and the weight of the lemon in your hand.

In a moment you will close your eyes and imagine cutting the lemon into quarters.

You then bring the lemon up to your mouth and as you squeeze on the lemon you suck the juice.

So go ahead, close your eyes and imagine you are holding a lemon quarter and you are sucking the juice.

As you open your eyes you may notice the amount of saliva in your mouth. Did it increase? When I ask this question in seminars or workshops some people screw up their face and get that tangy, tingly sensation in their mouths or through their body.

It is not the words that make the change. It is your interpretation of the words. As you create the thoughts in your mind, your body reacts and changes take place.

Just for a moment remember a friend from school. Remember one particular time with that friend.

This is an example of recalling a stored memory.

Imagine for a moment you are at your ideal weight, Imagine how good you will feel. Imagine how good you will look and feel.

Sharon was a smoker for 20yrs, she tried to quit numerous times and found it very hard. After trying everything to quit, she decided that she was finished with the traditional ways of quitting. Cold turkey was way to hard and so she decided to delve deep into a higher part of herself that she had always communicated with and believed in. "First sign of madness, lol" "Call it what you like, she calls it - Infinite Intelligence and Source Energy" The main thing was, that she quit smoking permanently in 2002. The first thing that she let go of before she quit, was all the limited beliefs that kept her smoking, Her reasons and excuses that she used each time she went back to smoking. These limiting beliefs continued to cause conflict in her mind and made it hard for her to quit ever time she tried. Such as; "Cigarettes relax me," "I am addicted to nicotine,""I will never quit," "They are my friend," "I need them,""I will be angry with out them,""I can't live without them," etc, etc. This story went on and on, just like the soap opera: "The day's of Our Lives" Once she transformed these beliefs to an opposite belief, such as; "I will find new ways to relax," I can live without them, I want to live healthily," There is scientific proof, that after 3 day's, I will be free off nicotine for ever," "I will quit, or they will quit me," This so called friend of mine is slowly killing me,""I want more in my life,""I need to love my body, I love myself, I need freedom, I am in charge of my thought's, feelings and behaviors." These concentrated thoughts empowered her more and more, as the day's went by. Then she chose a day to quit, then intuitively and naturally she discovered a way to focus her mind on being a non-smoker and all the benefits that she would gain by being a non-smoker. She placed an idea in her mind by using visualization, imagining herself on a polluted island that was destroying her health. Then imagined leaving that island and catching a boat to get to another island that was so beautiful and had only pure oxygen. She imagined everyday in her mind getting to that island and her creative mind took her on a journey getting there and what it was like living there. "This generated a lot of good feelings" She imagined the island being so good for her health and had everything that she wanted on it. Before she knew it, she was not thinking about smoking anymore, she was to busy thinking about the island that she was on and imagining how awesome it was living her life on it. Especially when people smoked around her. Days and months passed by and that visualization and imaginary of the island that she conjured up in her mind became a living reality. She then went on from there to become a qualified hypnotherapist to help other people. While professionally studying hypnotherapy and the roots of hypnosis, she was reading a hypnotic script that she had been given by her teacher to help people quit smoking and it was then that she realized that she had consciously used the power of her imagination, through visualization and other senses and had been doing what is today called self-hypnosis. She had self-hypnotised - herself, to quit cigarettes, by tapping and using the creative part of her mind.She was aware that she was using the powerful part of her mind at the time to quit cigarettes, but she was not aware at the time that it was self-hypnosis. Equipped with a lot of tools in her tool box she then consciously used this therapy combined with NLP and Time-Line Therapy to release old emotions and release other unwanted behaviors and many other addictions in her life.
